Hi guys! I’m Fernanda Silvestre (@nanndasilvestre), 30, brazilian, a social media planner and lover, and crazy about foursquare. I have to say it’s a pleasure to post here. It’s really an honor to be part of this team! Thanks a lot, Juice and Carlos, for the invitation! I do really appreciate it!

So to start posting here I’m gonna tell about our foursquare’s reality in Brazil.

Here, we are still a small foursquare community (for a huge country) but we’re growing fast.

foursquare in São Paulo - Brazil

I’m (as a super-user level-2) very happy to find lots of venues to fix, because it means people are using foursquare and enjoying it. They sometimes create strange venues (but it’s a matter for another post lol)!

Some of us have been using foursquare since the beginning, but most of people are now discovering what foursquare is and what is its purpose.

Because of this, I think this year promises a lot in Social Media area, mainly because of geolocation. And of course, foursquare contributes a lot for this. Many social media analysts and agencies are discovering this new potential tool for business and their clients and now we can find Specials almost everywhere!

foursquare venues in Ribeirão Preto

Small business understood that foursquare could help them to find a way in social marketing and to have a better performance in sales!

We still need more social media professionals who understand more about all the possibilities that this social network can offer. They are on the way to give them better options to their clients and to create more creative Specials!

foursquare: sampa badge

We are so happy with all the development of foursquare last year. We celebrate our SAMPA badge and all the efforts of foursquare team to make claim venues easier for us.

We heart foursquare!

I s2 foursquare!

In today’s advancing technology world, small businesses are better able to compete with the middle to large-sized corporations; this is a really great thing! However, while this helps them compete on the same playing field, it does not mean that small businesses can just rush to implement a newer technology or social media tool. Instead, there needs to be an understanding of the business goals that each tool tackles along with what type of strategies would work best in each situation. Action without first understanding and then planning can often do more damage than not acting at all. The same is true when you claim your venue and implement a new foursquare special. Through my discussions with many foursquare users, new and veteran – superusers and not, one of the biggest complaints (head shakers of sorts) is that some businesses just do not get it. Here are three simply tips to go by:

  1. Do not rush it ~ Plan & Act! Take the time to understand your foursquare customers and then create a great special to reward them for checking in. Too often, small businesses will rush to claim their venue and then throw a dull, lackluster incentive on foursquare and think that it will work just fine.
  2. Be Specific! Sometimes, businesses are not that specific about their specials. I saw a local business in my area that offered a free brow wax on their first check-in. But, when I called about it and asked for more details, I learned that I actually needed to buy a facial of some sort in order to get that waxing for free. It was safe to say that they did they did not understand that somebody could simply check-in when walking in the door and in an effort to request more information rather than making their first check-in only after arranging an appointment over the phone. Needless to say, they are no longer in business; what a shame!
  3. Communicate with Employees! Lastly, they never tell their employees much about the special, leaving them blind when the customers come in. When a customer comes in and unlocks a special, it is important that the other employees are in the loop about how to proceed with the redemption of that special. You want to make a great impression on that customer; in many cases, he or she is coming in for the very first time, and you want to begin to build that relationship right from the beginning!

So, there you have it – a few quick foursquare tips for the business owners out there! Did I miss any tips that you think business owners need to know about? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!

One of the best things about Foursquare – communities are growing worldwide and local groups are creating amazing initiatives. Today, I’ll try to describe Latvia in foursquare briefly.

If someone would ask me to describe Latvia as an material, I would say – amber; if as a taste – a slightly bitter taste of a homemade beer. If color – all the autumn colors; but if the description would involve places worth to visit I would undoubtly reach to my mobile and press the Explore button in foursquare app.

If you are looking to Latvia on the map – zoom in – it’s a small country near the Baltic Sea. And we have around 7125 foursquare users here, which in comparison with 10+ million of foursquare fans worldwide also could sound not quite impressive.

Despite the numbers – you can feel the energy inside those who dedicate time to foursquare not only a SU team here, but also creators of local (and for this moment – international) stats tool – That’s an analytics resource developed from, a project seen by @dens and spotted also by @aboutfoursquare last year.

We had our first swarm party and fun events. Local mobile carrier held a new shop opening as a swarm party last year. There was also a badge hunting party held by a bus line on a Foursquare day. Just recently, I was happy to see that we have successfully moved over simple swarms – few well attended musical events acquire swarm badges in no-time.

Brands – ‘what about them’– you would ask? Frankly speaking, there are some interesting projects from the brands.  The most valued is LiveRiga ( – a tourist information service. They are giving tips and insights about the places worth visiting here in Latvia.  Some of the national brands are experimenting with foursquare but as always, the most effective and agile are small businesses. These small businesses have learned the most precious is the possibility to build up brand loyalty among consumers.

As an answer from community, were sounds of lists covering happy hour specials, great outdoor places and memorable party experiences.

I do not want sound like an annoying sales agent, but you should plan your journeys to Latvia – enjoy the wild nature, great food and lots of places to check in!.

Are you using Foursquare?

Well, I am for both business and personal reasons, and I love it. Awhile back, I had the idea of celebrating Foursquare Day on April 16th. (4 and 4 squared – yes, I am that nerdy). Basically, it is an excuse to get out into the community and celebrate with friends. (I posted more details on my main blog here).

Well, it turns out that this is the stickiest idea I have had in awhile. Not only has it been well received by friends on Twitter and Facebook, but Laura Petrolino of Flying Pig Communications started a Facebook page, which is growing by the minute! She also wrote about the business potential of the idea on her blog!

So why all the excitement? Here are a few thoughts:

People like new things. Novelty is a powerful motivator, as least for me. Just because it is new, doesn’t mean that it is good, but it is likely different. Foursquare isn’t brand-new, but it is newer to a lot of people, and if they are hearing positive things after SXSW, they may be inclined to join in.

People like to be “in the know.” It is fun to turn other people on to new things that you think they might like, just for the thrill. It also can be useful to be thought of as someone who “knows things.” If this turns into as big a party in real life as I’d like, then being the person that invites people to the party is nice in its own right.

People like to be a part of something larger than themselves. This is the whole foundation of social media: Being an independent player in the bigger picture. Using individual actions to create the environment in which we act. We can literally create a holiday out of thin air, just because we think it is a cool thing to do.

People like to support local businesses! Foursquare Day allows people to not only go out to celebrate, but also to tell the whole world about their favorite places – the ones that are funky, the ones that provide great service or have great food. And it only takes a few seconds.

People like to party: Self-explanatory. 🙂

So, if the idea behind Foursquare Day appeals to you, then join the Facebook group page and start using the #4sqday hashtag! If you really want to help promote the day, contact me. If it does nothing for you, then move along to the next post or tweet – there surely is something great out there waiting for you!
