A veteran of #4sqDay, the City Spotlight turns to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Along with Tampa, this is Portsmouth’s 3rd year holding a #4sqDay. The team has grown to four city leaders and will be getting some assistance from the University of New Hampshire to help promote the big day.
When asked ‘what made you want to host the party’ their response was beautiful, we had to publish it whole:
Portsmouth is just a small town in the Northeast, but we have an incredibly tech-savvy community that quickly embraces the use of social media to connect with one another, do good, and share information with one another. When Foursquare emerged, we were eager to use it to make our community even stronger. Our mission has always been to provide a forum for businesses and individuals to share information, special offers, and special events with each other, and to learn more about how foursquare and other location-based services can bring our community together.
The team forsees a drop in this years attendance. Since 2011’s 4sqDay was on a Saturday, Portsmouth’s city leaders feel about 50% will be back. They are also working on a raffle or maybe something charity related to bring in more people. However, during the last two Novembers, Portsmouth’s crew holds a ‘Check-in to Charity’ event. This event brings in donations toward Movember.
Education about how to register a special or venue has been a minor stumbling block. To counteract that, they’ve created blog posts and printed handouts to help local businesses. The team is still working out the details with the venue on what specials will be provided for the big day, but also have posted other venues that will have specials.
The Portsmouth 4sqDay team is really focused on businesses. They created special Rack Cards that are being handed out to local businesses which were designed by Vital Design and printed by Infinite Imaging. Other local sponsors include: Vital Design, Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, Raka Creative, The Music Hall, and the University of New Hampshire.
Last year, former-Mayor Ferrini did declare April 16th as 4sqDay. The team is working with the new mayor, Mayor Spear to show them the world of foursquare. We wish them good luck!
It is worth noting that in 2010, Portsmouth was the top-ranked city for attendees 4sqDay.
I cannot believe it is already the 3rd Foursquare Day!! When we started with the first 4sqDay, the real drama was about who was stronger, Gowalla or foursquare, and whether foursquare would reach 1M users before 4/16. Time really flies when you are having fun and we now know the answers to both of those questions! How amazing it is to see this event that we started in Tampa continuing all over the world each year. I have been told by many Tampa Bay locals that they are proud that 4sqDay started in Tampa.
I am excited that lots of people, including our Mayor IRL Bob Buckhorn, are getting involved. We have a number of cool events planned this year, that are spaced-out thorough the day and across the city. This is fantastic because I have always wanted to have a diverse group of events that welcome everyone, than one single event. In fact, there are events scattered through the day. Come to one or all!

Day four of City Spotlight features Los Angeles, and a guest post by Vanessa (the 4sqDay Cupcake girl).
Being the foursquare enthusiast that I am, I decided to bake foursquare badge cupcakes and bring them to last year’s #4sqday event in Los Angeles! They turned out to be a huge hit not only at the LA event but were even featured on Mashable and on foursquare’s blog!
This year, I was excited to attend again yet saw that no venue had been announced yet. I reached out to Sara Cho ([@gurlinla] who organized last year’s event) and offered to help her plan this year’s #4sqday! We immediately started brainstorming ideas on how to make LA’s event even bigger and better than the last and began reaching out to potential sponsors and scouting local venues!
Working together, we quickly secured an amazing venue (Casey’s Irish Pub) in downtown LA that features an awesome outdoor patio and a beautifully spacious interior as well! The pub will be offering their all night happy hour special as well as free pub fries for everyone who checks in on foursquare! Oh and of course, I will be bringing my famous foursquare cupcakes for everyone to enjoy.
Sara and I used our connections as well as the @4sqLA Twitter handle to secure several amazing event sponsors including Ghost Post, Digital LA, Jenga, Snap Fiesta and PubCrawls.com! Needless to say, these awesome sponsors are providing a wide array of activities and entertainment! Guests will be greeted with official foursquare swag including Mayor crowns, #4sqday t-shirts, buttons and more! Snap Fiesta will be generously donating their photobooth services to document the night with group photos that can be printed and taken home as a souvenir and Jenga will be providing games including a Jenga XXL set to play outside on the patio.
Ghost Post will be sponsoring a scavenger hunt where guests will be invited to participate for a chance to win an iPod Touch! To keep the night foursquare focused, Digital LA will also be hosting a panel discussion on how foursquare can be used in the entertainment industry. For this, I will be a featured speaker along with one of my clients, Daniel Bedingfield to talk about how musicians can utilize the network to connect with and reward loyal fans.
If you’re in the Los Angeles area, we hope that you will join us in celebration of #4sqday (RSVP here)! Stay tuned for more details to be announced and look for photos on instagram with the tag #4sqday to follow celebrations around the globe.

City Highlight Day Three: The City by the Bay, San Francisco.
Chamin Mills, creator of 4sqdaySF and the Marketing and Events Manager for Pacific Catch restaurants, will be hosting their third annual 4sqDay “Swarm” event April 16th at Pacific Catch on 9th Ave.
Pacific Catch restaurants were early adopters of Foursquare and they were one of the first to jump on board when @nateBW suggested his creative 4sqday 4/16 idea back in March 2010.
“We are always looking for creative, current, economical, marketing tools that support our efforts to reach out and engage with our guests in real time. Foursquare, used in conjunction with Twitter, allows us to do that. We are also located in areas where potential new guests or tourists unfamiliar with the city may be “exploring” on Foursquare. Many of these Foursquare components help us reach new customers and retain loyal customers. Celebrating Foursquare Day is an extension of these objectives by bringing the guest engagement experience full circle in a fun creative way..and who doesn’t love a good party.” – Chamin Mills
Last year, San Francisco had the 6th most attendees for 4sqDay 2011 and raised $6K for Tsunami relief. This year Chamin foresees a greater turn out and will be raising money for the San Francisco & Marin Food Bank. “Community is important to Foursquare, therefore we feel giving back to the community should be the focus of an event that celebrates all things Foursquare”.

For our latest installment of City Spotlight, we are looking to Slovenia, where Matija has some neat plans for 4sqDay.
Located in the capital city of Slovenia, Ljubjana will have it’s second 4sqDay celebration. Matija and his partner in crime, Hiha, hosted the party last year with 55 foursquare users. However, Matija will be on his own this year organizing the event.
“We will have sponsor this year – Nokia” says Matija in an email. Nokia will be providing free snakes and drinks during the event, which he hopes to have up 70 attendees. When asked why does it host these events, Matija states “I like foursquare and I’m really in the mood to organize those kind of events.”
Matija mentioned a few troubles last year. The biggest issue was that his Swag kit arrived late. On top of that, Customs ask for $100 to have it delivered. This year, I’ve personally been working for months with foursquare to try to solve this problem. Foursquare set a few deadlines to ensure that Swag kits will arrive well before April 16th.
Along with buttons and t-shirts that will be custom made from a local vendor, Matija expects to real Mayor to arrive at the party. “We’re in a good relationship with the mayor so
[getting a proclamation] wont be a problem” Matija adds.
To see where Ljubljana is on the leader board, check them out on Meetup.
Good luck to Ljubljana, and have a great 4sqDay!
