Thanks to some work by Chris Credendino Foursquare Day now has a page on Wikipedia! This is great, but now the page needs a little love from Wiki editors the world over! Use your judgment to make the page strong.

Feel free to use our Press Page and the main site for reference.  I hope to be putting up some more blog posts here with some more data about April 16 and well some of the ideas we have moving forward.

PS: While you are at it, the Foursquare wiki page itself could use some attention.

During and immediate following Foursquare Day, there were a lot of fascinating blog posts about the various swarms and festivities. In fact, there now is a steady 160,000 Google hits for “Foursquare Day” so you know we cannot possible have read them all.

But now that we have had some time to catch up, we’ll be post snippets of some of the more interesting Foursquare Day posts. The first one, comes from us from Prague, of the Czech Republic. We were watching them closely, as they were super-organized from the beginning.

As a result of grassroot efforts, 16th April was declared “Foursquare day”. Since Czech people always try to trick and outsmart the others, #prague4sqday was called for 15th April, putting us in the lead. Unsure about number of 4sq users, the meet-up organizers hoped at least 50 users would come, earning this way the “swarm badge” (wondering how many badges are there? I like this list).

It all took place in a famous restaurant Como (in the heart of Prague life – Wenceslas Square), because it is the only place in Prague where you can actually get some bonus for check in (15% discount for every second check-in during happy hours). The place is run by Matesola, a famous food blogger, who helped the geeks enter the mysterious world of chefs, wait stuff, wine distibutors and more. Being one of the first in .cz to try out Twitter for promotion of a venue, seeing him as 4sq poweruser comes as no surprise. The other organizer was Martin Hassman, well known editor / writer / consultant among Czech geeks 🙂

Matesola welcomed us in Como, promised more free drinks (I was driving later, so I got a bottle of non-alcoholic beer as an extra, thanks!) and snacks after Martin’s presentation “Everything you always wanted to know about Foursquare but were afraid to ask”. Available on prezi – but only in Czech. Meanwhile people start to gather in small and liquid circles trying to match the faces and nicknames, meeting old friends and making new ones.

We are putting a call out for guest posts about your awesome Foursquare Day experiences. If you are interested, email

You have probably noticed that things have been a bit quiet here at Foursquare Day headquarters this last week. The reality is that after a few weeks of non-stop Foursquare activity, most all of us volunteers needed to tend to our lives, our families, our jobs, our cars…. You get the idea. We are also currently reorganizing so that we can best move forward. Literally all our effort was on making 4/16 as cool as possible and now with that accomplished we are stepping back, looking at the big picture, and trying to do things the “right way” instead of the “fast way.”

But there has been some activity on the site. You may have seen this page that Jessica put together to showcase the press that out little project has received. It really is astounding. Not only is the list quite long but it is incredibly diverse. It is certainly worth skimming and clicking on a few of the articles.

Here are a few items of note:

  • Mashable/NBC – As our movement was growing so big, so fast around the world, we were a bit surprised that Mashable had no interest in Foursquare Day. None. But at some point they couldn’t ignore the grass roots and so on Foursquare Day we get the amazing Crowley/Mashable/NBC piece.
  • Global Times – This is noteworthy for two reasons. It was the first foreign press we received. And the global times has a readership of something like 100M (yes, 10% of a Billion). China is such a fascinating place when talking about scale.
  • Creative Loafing – I cannot say enough glowing things about about quickly, thoroughly, and well Creative Loafing ran with the Foursquare Day story. As a Tampa publication, they really embraced it and we appreciate their coverage and support during the local swarm at the Hyatt. We look forward to continuing to work with them.
  • Local Press – One element of Foursquare Day that simply cannot be ignored is that due to the speed at which it grow, small businesses and communities had a distict advantage when rallying the event. The large corporations were simply too cumbersome and the giant cities too busy. But in communities like North Andover, Mass, Foursquare Day spread like wildfire.

There were a few letdowns as well. There was talk about New York Times coverage, but that didn’t materialize. BBC America was originally scheduled to come to Bright Eyes to film some lead up to and execution of the Global Swarm, but that fizzed. There may have been some brief coverage on CNN on 4/17, but we can’t find any evidence of it.

Note that we had to draw the line somewhere, otherwise the list would be over 100,000 entries long (number of Google hits for “Foursquare Day” since April 16.) We didn’t include personal blogs in the list. If you feel strongly that your blog entry should qualify as press, please send the link to And if there is other press coverage that we might have missed, please let us know!

OK swarming people! We want to see you party! Send in your links and we’ll post them!

Hey blogosphere! We sent an e-mail out earlier today, but if you didn’t get one it’s because we don’t have your e-mail address. We still wanted to share, so check it out the flier below and be sure to sign up here so you don’t run the risk of missing out next time. @redheadjessica

Happy Foursquare Day!

Here’s a couple last minute tips from the Foursquare Day HQ in Tampa, FL!

Hey folks, today is Foursquare Day!

We want to make sure your business gets the most out of the day, so here are a few suggestions:

First, make sure your employees are on board and excited. Tell them that there will be people coming in talking and asking about Foursquare and about your offer. Be friendly and relaxed. You don’t want your customers feeling uncomfortable asking for the special, so ask them!

Second, we have made a sign for you to put up today, or you can make your own announcing that you are a Foursquare day participating venue. If you don’t have a regular Foursquare special, consider one, and announce it to visitors encouraging them to come back often. Be prepared to share with non Foursquare customers what Foursquare is, and how they can get involved, and your special offer. Encourage them to become fans of Foursquare Day as a resource on Facebook, and be sure to get yourself on there and throw in a shout out or two. Also, hop on Twitter and jump in on the hashtag #4sqday. Many of you also have local Foursquare Day organizers and hashtags. Here’s a good place to start looking: Foursquare Day Local Pages on Facebook.

Remember that you have tons of resources at your disposal at, including history, links, FAQ, etc. Above all, remember this day is about fun and creatively bringing business to your door! Have fun with it! Make the people who check in feel special; this is your chance to make some new fans while rewarding your existing ones.

Don’t forget: There is an official badge, to shoutout at 4:16 local time today, and to try to attend a local Swarm party so you can try for the Swarm and Super Swarm badges! If you’re feeling really frisky, get involved in the Foursquare Day Challenges!

You may have noticed that when you visit our nifty map at the moment, it loads well but doesn’t show any of the icons.

Foursquare Day has been overwhelmed with responses from all over the world and we simply couldn’t keep up. Sorry for the inconvenience, but we think not being able to keep up with putting everyone on the map is proof of how awesome the support (and participation!) has been. The whole words loves #4sqday!

But you should know that the list of events still works fine and is up-to-date. We are looking into the map and will have it up as soon as humanly possible.

-The Tampa Foursquare Day Crew

PS: It seems itself is down at the moment. And we warned them. So we don’t feel too bad about the map. 🙂  (But we’ll get it back soon!)

Thanks to the awesomeness of Jason Keene, our map was back up in no time.

Oohing and ahhing about the map at the Tampa Swarm

Woot! It is finally Foursquare Day. Time to celebrate!  And, of course, we want to get the hashtag #4sqday trending all day! It is all about getting enough people to tweet #4sqday enough on Twitter.

So that we are successful, here are some suggestions:

  • To celebrate around the world, let’s do the WAVE! Where ever you are at 4:16 pm local, stop and use foursquare to shout “Happy #4sqday!” Then if you see friends in other time zones, feel free to wave back!
  • If you going to tweet something, shout it and include #4sqday! This lets other foursquare users know and gets the hashtag on twitter.
  • Be sure to add #4sqday to all your check-ins!

We’ll be monitoring the twitter trend and will let you all know when we see #4sqday!!

Have fun!

As we posted in this post yesterday, the Foursquare Day badge is very real. However, how to unlock it remains a mystery.

Here is what we know:

  • There are some people who already have their badges
  • It only takes one zero check ins to get that badge – just a shout.
  • You are supposed to shout something foursquare related when you check from the foursquare phone app.
  • We haven’t heard reports of anyone in the US getting a badge yet. (The  badge has been activated in the US!)

This is a guest post by Sandra Farkash, a 6th Grade Math Teacher at Park Maitland School in Maitland, FL. I saw a tweet about what they were doing and asked Ms. Farkash to share. I totally love this! Why didn’t we have math teachers this cool when I was in 6th grade?!? The school even has an awesome blog. – Nate BW

At Park Maitland, we approach math in a real world manner. We want students to see how math applies to their everyday lives, and so we often incorporate current events and new technology. 4square Day provides the perfect opportunity for students to understand how math is being utilized in the latest technology trends and how it helps connect people not only in their community but across the world.

On 4/16, we will be reinforcing the concept of square numbers and giving relevance to the concept of square miles. After first, we will be calculating the circumference and area of the Earth, to tie in with Earth Day celebrations as well as the international aspect of 4square Day. We will then be using Google Earth to determine the 4 square miles around our school to bring a more local aspect to the project. Students will be voting on their 4 favorite places within the 4 square mile area and where they would most frequently “check in” and at what frequency. At the end of the day after all the classes have voted, we will determine the single favorite “check in” where I will officially do a “check in” on behalf of the sixth grade students for Park Maitland School.
