For the last three years, I’ve dealt with the same issue during this time of year… the 4sqDay 5. Maybe you’ve experienced it, too. The hustle and bustle of getting things ready for 4sqDay, the stress of everyday life, the fact that I don’t work out like I used to… followed by all the eating and drinking and being merry on 4/16 all combine to result in tighter fitting pants, an unnatural fear of getting on the bathroom scale, and the gradual suspicion that I am, in fact, becoming a huge blob.

But this year, there was no disputing it. The evidence of my poor health choices was obvious to everyone… especially in this picture:

Tampa’s real Mayor, Bob Buckhorn is the dapper-looking man on the left, who has shown leadership in using foursquare as Mayor. I am the wide-looking guy in the 4sqDay shirt on the right. There is no denying it. I’m the largest I have even been. The heaviest I have ever been. And I need to change my ways.

Think about it. Do you see a little bit of yourself in my chubby profile? Did you have one too many cupcakes this year? Did that awesome bulking up routine fall victim to a series of awesome check in drink specials?

Well, this year is DIFFERENT. This year, instead of gaining 5 pounds by next 4sqDay, we all are going to get in the best shape of our lives. Ladies and Gentleman, with the help of foursquare, each other, and all manner of new apps and gadgetry, we are going to get you Fit By 4sqDay.

This is the plan:

  1. Think of a challenging but reasonable health goal that you’d like to a achieve in 1 year. It could be anything. Loose Weight. Complete a half marathon. This is not a crash-diet or three day fast. This is changing you habits and lifestyle to meet your goals in one year that can set you up for future years of success.
  2. Go to Fitocracy and sign up for the Fit By 4sqDay Group. Here you will find tons of foursquare fanatics of all different fitness levels ready to join you, support you when you are weak, and give you mad props when you succeed.
  3. Think about what you can do to help the group succeed. Have a favorite health app like RunKeeper, Nike+, or fitsquare? Write up a guest blog post and we’ll publish it. Are you hugely successful with Weight Watchers, going Vegan, or Paleo? Tell us why it is working. When chatting health and fitness, use the #FitBy4sqDay hashtag, so we can follow and share.

And to show you that we are serious, we have some professionals on board to keep us all motivated. I’m happy to introduce Kristin and Kevin Votta fromFitness-Tek. You can see them on the right.  They will be posting useful information and be active in the Fitocracy group. We are excited to have them on board.

All of this is free. The only thing you have to lose is a few pounds. So who is with me? Who wants to be a monster on the foursquare court next year?

Let’s Get Fit By 4sqDay!

if you are looking for a fitness-friendly social media network, look no further than foursquare! For whatever reason(s), foursquare has embraced the fitness community, and I am glad to see this. As an avid gym rat and fitness fanatic, it pleases me to see that foursquare has gone a bit further to support healthy living. Foursquare does this in three primary ways, mayorships, points, and badges!

Mayorships

As most of us know, the person who checks into a venue the most [number of days] within a [rolling] 60 days period is considered to be the mayor of that venue! If you have a few fitness fanatics who are also foursquare fanatics at your gym (like we have at my gym), you will soon find yourself in a friendly battle for the mayorship of your gym. On those days where you do not feel like going to the gym, maintaining or earning your gym’s foursquare mayorship can help boost your motivation to get off the couch and hit the gym! I know that it does for me!

Points

Maybe not quite as cool as a mayorship, some people really like to have more points than their friends. When you go to a venue every month, every week, or every day, you have a greater chance to earn bonus points, which will help you jump up the leaderboard! So, checking into the gym more frequently will earn you additional points and possibly bragging rights.

Badges

If you love badges, foursquare has a bunch of healthy-living related badges for you to earn today. First, if you go to the gym ten times or more in a 30 day period, you earn the highly-coveted gym rat badge! If you want more badges, you are in luck. Join Health Month, link up your account with foursquare, and you can earn an additional badge each month based on the health and fitness goals that you set for yourself. If you keep track of your workouts using RunKeeper, be sure to link your profile with foursquare and earn badges for completing different cardio workouts! Lastly, if you have a fitbit, now is the time to connect it with foursquare and earn even more badges! Currently, they have two partner badges with foursquare!

The Fitbit

I have had my Fitbit since right before Valentine’s Day! It really is a cool gadget that helps me keep track of how many steps I walk each day, and helps me figure out how many floors I have walked up and down, how many overall miles I have walked, how well I am sleeping, and how many calories I burn each day. Like I said above, they offer two foursquare badges, one for when I take 20,000 or more steps in a given day and one for when I surpass 1,000 total miles. I only found out about the fitbit because of foursquare and these badges, and I am now using this device and foursquare to help keep me motivated each day! Just yesterday and in an effort to earn my 20k badge, Elaine, Jamie, and I took their dog up to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park for about four hours of hiking up and down the mountain. When I was low on water or energy, I remembered that my goal was to surpass 20,000 steps that day, so I pushed on. It is amazing how a simple badge can motivate you.

Winning Combination

Together, foursquare and fitbit really make a winning combination. Because of the two, I am living a highly-motivated, healthier lifestyle. The great news is that you can do the same! As we approach 4sqDay, take the time to earn some fitness badges!

One of the great and intriguing things foursquare is connected with is health (and well-being). At first glance, you might not think that foursquare would be focused on or even care about something like fitness or health, but, in fact, they are really big on lifestyle and how its users live their lives. Interestingly, foursquare rewards people for their healthy habits (and sometimes not so healthy habits) via badges. For those really excited about earning badges, foursquare rewards those who go to the gym or connect with specific health-driven technology applications and services. To get the gym rat badge, for example, a foursquare user just has to go to the gym 10 times over the course of 30 days. That might not sound like much, but imagine if you are new to fitness or merely trying to get back in shape. With foursquare, you are rewarded for your fitness efforts. And it does not stop with the gym rat badge; instead, there are badges associated with partners within the health and fitness industry like Health Month, RunKeeper, FitBit. Health Month is the foursquare partnering service that helps users set monthly goals and then keep track of them throughout the month. At the end, if they achieve their lifestyle and fitness goals that they set (and at the level that they set), they achieve a new badge. On the other hand, RunKeeper is an application that allows gym-goers to track their workout routines! They give you foursquare badges for doing 3 or 5 different fitness activities on the app, for running 5 kilometers, and for running a marathon! Most recently, FitBit teamed up with foursquare to offer its foursquare-using customers a badge when they take 20,000 or more steps in a day and when they reach a total of 1,000 logged miles!

On top of all of this, some local gyms and national fitness brands are turning to foursquare to offer unique deals for their foursquare customers! Earlier this year on Foursquare Day, LA Fitness offered some unique specials to its members and their non-member foursquare friends! They even rewarded the venue mayor at their gym locations with great swag. All in all, there are numerous ways brands, foursquare partners, and the foursquare app/network itself encourages you to stay fit and have fun with it. So, what are you waiting for? Get to the gym and earn a few badges while you get in the best shape of your life! I look forward to seeing you there!
