Tampa Bay Businesses Encourage Customers To Check In On APRIL 16, 2010

[March 31, 2010] – Tampa, FL – April 16, 2010 – Foursquare Officially announced that April 16 will be known world-wide as Foursquare Day. Tampa Bay Businesses are encouraging the community to “Check In” using the location-based social network, Foursquare throughout the day for local specials and swag. Restaurants and coffee shops will be among the many different businesses throughout Tampa Bay participating in bringing the community together.

There are multiple ways that local businesses can benefit from the use of Foursquare and the participation in Foursquare Day. Contests and discounts through location-based social networks will help businesses make use of the Social Web as a promotional tool and will allow for their customers to engage more with the brand locally. Foursquare users earn points as they visit new places or return to familiar establishments in hopes of becoming the “Mayor” of that location. Getting involved is easy so head on over to Foursquare and get your account so you can participate in all of the Foursquare Day festivities.

Are you using Foursquare?

Well, I am for both business and personal reasons, and I love it. Awhile back, I had the idea of celebrating Foursquare Day on April 16th. (4 and 4 squared – yes, I am that nerdy). Basically, it is an excuse to get out into the community and celebrate with friends. (I posted more details on my main blog here).

Well, it turns out that this is the stickiest idea I have had in awhile. Not only has it been well received by friends on Twitter and Facebook, but Laura Petrolino of Flying Pig Communications started a Facebook page, which is growing by the minute! She also wrote about the business potential of the idea on her blog!

So why all the excitement? Here are a few thoughts:

People like new things. Novelty is a powerful motivator, as least for me. Just because it is new, doesn’t mean that it is good, but it is likely different. Foursquare isn’t brand-new, but it is newer to a lot of people, and if they are hearing positive things after SXSW, they may be inclined to join in.

People like to be “in the know.” It is fun to turn other people on to new things that you think they might like, just for the thrill. It also can be useful to be thought of as someone who “knows things.” If this turns into as big a party in real life as I’d like, then being the person that invites people to the party is nice in its own right.

People like to be a part of something larger than themselves. This is the whole foundation of social media: Being an independent player in the bigger picture. Using individual actions to create the environment in which we act. We can literally create a holiday out of thin air, just because we think it is a cool thing to do.

People like to support local businesses! Foursquare Day allows people to not only go out to celebrate, but also to tell the whole world about their favorite places – the ones that are funky, the ones that provide great service or have great food. And it only takes a few seconds.

People like to party: Self-explanatory. :)

So, if the idea behind Foursquare Day appeals to you, then join the Facebook group page and start using the #4sqday hashtag! If you really want to help promote the day, contact me. If it does nothing for you, then move along to the next post or tweet – there surely is something great out there waiting for you!

Cheers.

Foursquare has gotten some good press recently, thanks in part to SXSW. I want to help, by turning April 16 into Foursquare Day!

Background: I’ve been a fan of foursquare since before I could even use it. While it was incubating in New York, I was reading about foursquare on Mashable, but since Tampa wasn’t yet an open city, I couldn’t do much. Immediately after Tampa was unlocked I blogged and tried to get the word out to friends and fellow business owners. Although I used the mobile site, it wasn’t until I could download the Blackberry app, that I really began to see it as a game that also challenges me to try new venues in my neighborhood!

More background: I’ve always been a fan of geeky holidays. My birthday, October 23rd, falls on Mole Day (10^23). And of course March 14, (3.14) is Pi day. And May the 4th (May the force… with a lisp) is a great day for a Star Wars Day party!  So why not Foursquare Day? Let’s get out there and frequent some local venues on Friday, April 16.  Why then? Because it is the 4th month, and the 4-squared day!

To participate, all you have to do is check in somewhere on April 16, and use the #4sqday hashtag! Then party down! It is that easy!

But if you want to help us get the word out here are some other ideas:

For Users:

Share this blog post with everyone!

Tweet about it. Use the one-click tweet if you want to!

Vote the idea up on the official Foursquare Get Satisfaction page.

Join the Foursquare Day facebook page!

Tell your friends and use the #4sqday hashtag when making your plans!

For businesses:

Make sure your venue is up to date with correct info, tags, categories, etc. For example, here is Bright Eyes venue page.

Offer a special or discount on Foursquare Day! Tell everyone, put it on your webpage, blog about it, tweet about it. Stay tuned for our #4sqday discount!

I don’t think it is an improper use of tips to add a tip for your venue that you are celebrating Foursquare Day with a special of some sort, but others may disagree on that point.

It has been suggested that anyone who gets 4 check-ins on Foursquare Day get a Foursquare Day badge. I am all for this! If anyone knows how to bring this badge closer to reality, let me know!

So what am I missing? What else should we do to get the word out? What are you planning on doing to celebrate Foursquare Day? And don’t forget to friend me!

If you’d like to be a part of the #4sqday planning group let me know!
